I have heard some stupid stories in my lifetime, but this is one of the stupidest I have heard in a long time, and it is just so difficult to be sympathetic to this girls plight, because she has behaved so badly. Let’s hope she learns from her mistakes and all you online bingo players do too.We are always hearing about how life changing amounts of money can be won by people who play bingo, whether online or in land based clubs. While a life changing sum of money is different for everyone, much like the way an orange tastes, let’s define it for the purposes of this story. “Life Changing” – anything that changes your life for the better, so it could be an amount of £1,000 or an amount of £10,000, but anything above this amount is seriously life changing.
Now a young single mother of three from Yorkshire won just over £50,000 a little over a year ago while playing bingo. We have seen a lot of much bigger prizes, but let’s face it, this is a staggering amount of money.
Her rags to riches story has in just over a year, turned to a riches to rags story and as the tables turn, she is in the biggest s*#t of her life, and all because of sheer stupidity. She now finds that she is facing bankruptcy and eviction from her home. She doesn’t have money to send the kids to school some days because she hasn’t enough money to give it them for lunch, and because of her win, they don’t qualify for free dinners??
She has been denied benefits; again because of her win, and has to borrow money from her mother – what on earth has gone wrong? The Department of Work and Pensions has denied her benefits, and they have made a moral judgment to quantify this, stating she was irresponsible with her winnings. How can this possibly be the fault of the children? Talk about being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea!!
This is a very unfortunate lesson for everyone, but let it be known that the department will not spend tax payers’ money irresponsibly in terms of means tested entitlements, if that person has acted irresponsibly. It is very important not to lose your head over a big bingo win; in fact, it is then that you really have to get responsible.
