Every year researchers just can’t help themselves, but they have to discover what name the luckiest bingo players have, where they live and what the most prominent lucky number is. These release some interesting if somewhat odd results and they are great fun to read. I believe there is a real purpose behind doing these surveys, but it is fun to know the results and if these questions ever come up in your bingo pub or trivia quiz, you will at least know the answers.
For example if your name is Debbie, you live in Harrogate, Yorkshire and seven is your lucky number, you may be the luckiest bingo player in the entire British Isles. A couple of years ago this was Margaret from Edinburgh, Scotland! It doesn’t surprise me that 7 has come up as the luckiest number, if you conduct a bit of research on your own into this number, you will see that through history it has been meaningful in many ways. The next luckiest towns are Falkirk and Berwick upon Tweed and this data has been gleaned from a survey of 1 300 people regarding their attitudes to luck, and from the many thousands of members of mega bingo brand Mecca.

It found that in general the luck in the north of the country is better than in the south and again it is the luck of the Scots and not the Irish which comes up trumps. In terms of celebrities, Simon Cowell was found to be the luckiest (or is it the most talented?), while Katie Price’s ex husband Alex Reid was the unluckiest (perhaps he disagrees!). In the majority men with the name Steve are luckier than others and the unluckiest place in the British Isles to live is Bath.

In absolute contrast to the ideology that the Scots are tight with a penny, there were found to be the most giving, and they donate far more of their bingo winnings to family, friends or charity.

A recent study has revealed that British women are starting to play more roulette, and in some instances are choosing this game over online bingo. These results don’t really surprise me, both bingo and roulette are random number games in which the odds of winning cannot be manipulated. Apparently this is very much in line with US trends, and these ladies have hitting the online roulette tables for some time now.

In the recent past, roulette has been found to be the favorite game of our lady friends across the big pond, whereas bingo has been the number one game in the UK. Fortunately online bingo operators understand the needs of their members and they have been providing roulette games all along anyway. If you fancy a flutter on the roulette wheel and you are already playing at your favorite online bingo site, just change games, there is no need to go an open a whole new account somewhere else.

Pundits are talking “challenge” in as much as the ladies in the UK may make playing online roulette more popular than bingo. There will obviously come a point in time where the bingo boom bottoms out and levels, but for the time being there is no fear of this. In the meantime, if you haven’t tried playing online roulette, give it a go, it offers an incredible variety of betting options and this actually makes the game tremendously interesting as well as exciting. The more risk you are prepared to take, the greater the rewards, and if you want to learn, you can play for free until you have the hang of the game. If, like the Americans, you are playing the game for money, roulette does allow winners to turn a fast buck, and when I say fast, I mean it.

One thing that must be born in mind if you are considering the switch from online bingo to roulette is; bingo is soft gambling whereas roulette is hard gambling. But to fall in line with the demand for this game, wagers have become more affordable and Low Roller roulette can be found for as little as 1p a spin, and live roulette through online video streaming or on the TV satellite channels is also great fun.

Play Foxy Bingo....

The Breast Cancer Campaign and British Bingo work together all year long to raise funds for this incredibly important charitable concern. Their work culminates at the end of the year in October, when Breast Cancer week sees a week-long push of fundraising, everyone goes pink, and everyone gets involved in this. Not least of which, many online bingo sites of the like of Foxy Bingo get involved and they go all out to raise funds, getting involved from an organizational aspect (through special games), as well as staff members all doing their own individual bit.

Perhaps after seeing how successful online bingo can be for raising funds, the Breast Cancer Campaign, Fatspanner and SWP Terminal have joined forces to form “Dab For Life”. Fat Spanner has committed £10 000 to the project over the next two years and will be donating 5% of the proceeds from their share, regardless of whether Dab For Life succeeds or fails.

Test machines are ready to be demonstrated to operators, and have been released to some for testing, although we are not really sure what format this game is in. The news segment doesn’t say which bingo operators will be testing it, but I expect we shall hear what the results are in the not too distant future. The game is expected to be released for sale early in 2010. This kind of initiative shows how private sector industry; can help charitable concerns and still have a successful business model.

Bingo has by its nature, been used to raise funds for widows, orphans, to raise church steeple, and all kinds of charitable organizations and causes. This is only one of the many good works we see happening. Online bingo and other bingo brands all have their own favorite charity to donate to. This activity is not limited to just dedicating a game, with a share of the proceeds, although this does take place, it also means that employees get stuck in the thick of things. I have seen staff members jumping out of planes, organizing a bingo game at the highest altitude (base camp of Mt. Everest). They have collected shoes, mobile phones and climbed Mt. Snowdon, so it is no wonder that playing bingo doesn’t have the same kind of reputation which seems to cling to other forms of gambling activities.

It’s all win win win at the moment in the world of bingo! And the story of Selma Carrick, 57, from East Yorkshire is no exception at all. When Selma won over £39,000 at an online Bingo site, it started a chain of events that led to a proper Shirley Valentine style adventure!

“I’ll always remember the day I won the jackpot, because it really changed my life,” she said.
“I’d been going through a bit of a tough time after breaking up with my boyfriend. I’d sold my house, so I was living out of a box round at my mum’s and I wasn’t really sure what to do next.

“My two sons had both moved out, so I was taking the opportunity to have a bit of ‘me-time’ and to try new things.”

As a result, Selma joined one of the many online bingo websites out there, this time, the GMTV Bingo website. Speaking about the online bingo game, Selma said “I found it was a really good way to make new friends and have a bit of fun. I never expected a big win, I was just enjoying playing all the different games and chatting to the other players in the chat rooms.”

Despite having a fantastic time soaking up the atmosphere of online bingo, it was merely the beginning for Selma, especially when she got up, as usual on one day for a bit of eyes down fun.

She describes, “One morning, I got up and made some tea and toast as usual, and then sat down to play Bingo Gold, which is one of my favourite games on the site.

“While I was playing, something at the bottom of the screen caught my eye. It was the Bullion Bonanza mini game and I could see that the jackpot was really big – over £39,000.
“‘I wouldn’t mind winning that’ I laughed to myself, and I decided to give it a little go. All I needed to do was to click and spin the reels, and match the symbols.

“All of a sudden, my screen was filled with three winning gold bars. I almost choked on my tea! I jumped up screaming and started running around the kitchen. When I looked at my account, there was £39,430 in there. It was just amazing! I couldn’t wait to tell my family and friends, they all said it was a dream come true and were really happy for me.”

It was then that Selma’s thoughts turned to what she wanted to do with the money itself. A win of £40 k is pretty lifechanging by most people’s standards, and it seemed like Selma was keen to make the most of her big bingo win.

“After I’d calmed down and had a think about what to do with the money, I realised that I wanted to do something adventurous. Now that my sons were all grown up I had no ties to keep me at home, so I packed my bags and moved to Turkey – just like Shirley Valentine! I was nervous at first but it turned out to be one of the best things I ever did. I lived in Istanbul for a while, then toured Turkey for two years. I had a fantastic time.”

Now back in Blighty, Selma is keen to get back to where her heart really belongs – the bingo rooms online of course! “Now I’m back and I’ve got a whole new lease of life. I still play at GMTV Bingo, all my old friends are still there in the chat rooms and some of my other friends have joined up now too.

And it seems like Selma will have a lifetime of memories thanks to her jackpot joy, saying “It’s amazing to look back on the day I won and think about how much it’s changed my life. I feel so lucky”. We are really pleased to hear any stories about wins at online bingo as they always give us a real boost in looking out for the next game of bingo that could change a life – forever.
