Recently published market share figures reveal there is a big battle to win the hearts and wallets of online bingo players and claim the top spot in the UK bingo market. The latest research, compiled by FreebingoHunter, an online bingo portal, show that Tombola Bingo, Gala Bingo and Foxy Bingo are currently locked in a tug of war with bingo players, with Tombola currently victorious with a 17.16% market share of all “paid for” bingo players. The move could be linked to a recent marketing campaign by Tombola at the beginning of August, which has no doubt strengthened their position in the market, alongside it’s recent introduction of a 50 ball game of bingo and a new product called ‘Bubble Wrap Bingo’.
The next in the big three is Gala Bingo, which has most recently been underfire in the industry press regarding the stability of the company, and in particular it’s offline land based bingo operations. Despite job cuts and club closures, it seems online Gala seems to be doing well enough, with a market share of around 12.13%. Foxy Bingo, one of our personal faves, was lagging behind in third place, albeit with a respectable 8.83% share of the total UK online bingo market.
But for Cashcade, the owners of Foxy Bingo, who were recently bought out by US gaming company PartyGaming, there will still be cause for celebration. With Cashcade running in total around 6 big bingo brands, including the recently launched Little Big BIngo, Cheeky Bingo, Think Bingo and Foxy Bingo (plus recently added site Foxy Zero), Cashcade are by far the most popular bingo operator, with their brands holding an 18.35% share of the market. This means that every bingo player has a nearly 1 in 5 chance of ending up playing on a Cashcade site – showing just how much the company has expanded into one big happy bingo playing family!
There was good news for bingo newcomer Costa Bingo as well, with the site claiming a top ten spot in the research despite only being launched around 4 months afoot. Other sites looking to make a leap for the top ten include some of our favourites Crown Bingo and Posh Bingo, alongside Mirror Bingo, Bet365Bingo and Paddy Power Bingo. With all needing just a further 0.5% of market share to reach the big leagues, it seems like there is a lot to play for in the world of online bingo.
The top ten for August 2009 now currently looks like this:
Bingo Site %
1. Tombola 17.16
2. Gala Bingo 12.13
3. Foxy Bingo 8.83
4. Jackpotjoy 8.62
5. Mecca Bingo 6.43
6. Ladbrokes 4.70
7. Sun Bingo 4.66
8. Wink Bingo 4.54
9. William Hill 3.61
10. Costa Bingo 2.58
What was also interesting was the huge impact that free bingo sites are currently having in the UK bingo market. The research then factored in the free bingo games and player numbers, with the market analysis showing a significant movement in the rankings as a result. Gala bingo loses its number 2 spot to Cheeky bingo, which now stand as the biggest free to play bingo site in the UK, and even the top dog Tombola loses around 3 points on it’s market share thanks to new contenders. Many of the top spots have also shifted, as more people look to free bingo as a means of some fast and free bingo fun.
A spokesman for FreeBingoHunter.com, Simon Smiley, commented: “It is surprising to see how quickly free bingo has taken hold in the UK bingo market. With Cheeky Bingo being the first and biggest free bingo site; these figures also demonstrate the continued benefits to bingo companies which are first to act.”
