Love of bingo ruins a teacher’s career?!

If there is one thing that always raises our eyes from some eyes down action at thebingofinder, it’s a story about the bingo escapades of our friends in the good old US of A. And true to form, we were recently left surprised and slightly bewildered by the latest news concerning a Georgia school teacher. Seems like the honest game of bingo has been caught up again in a bit of transatlantic madness, with a bingo game forming the basis of a lawsuit against a Georgia school. Ashley Payne is set to sue her former employers at Barrow County school, saying they had violated state labour law following their dismissal of her. Which… drum roll please… was attributed to some rather innocent bingo related comments that she had posted on her Facebook profile!! Payne’s attorney, Richard Storrs, says the 24-year-old former Apalachee High School teacher was “not made aware of her rights” and should be granted the hearing.

After teaching at the school for two years, Payne resigned in August after her principal questioned her about her Facebook page, which included photos of her holding wine and beer and an expletive, all from a recent visit to a bingo game at an Atlanta Restaurant called “Crazy Bitch Bingo”.

The school apparently managed to catch site of the pictures, and in accordance with its policies investigated the matter. Barrow has a policy that states employees can be investigated and disciplined for postings on Web sites that contain provocative photographs, sexually explicit messages, use of alcohol, drugs or anything students are prohibited from doing. Anyone found to be in violation of this code of conduct could risk their job being terminated as a result.

According to court records, the schools principal told Payne that her online conduct was unacceptable and if she did not resign, she would face the axe. He then further advised that a suspension would adversely affect her chances for future employment. The filing states that McGee told Payne that she “could not win this” and that resignation was her best option. As a result, Payne resigned from the school system immediately, unaware she was entitled to a hearing and that a suspension could last a mere 10 days.

Now, we are all for rules and regulations at thebingofinder, but alas cannot stop ourselves from thinking this is a bit bonkers, even for the bingo world. Since when did going to a bingo game get you fired?! We can’t help but think Ms. Payne should have tried out a bit of online bingo –more fun and seeing as she is a fan of Facebook, she could find plenty of likeminded people at the Foxy bingo Facebook fan page for example! Whatever the outcome of the trial, we have to say, God Bless America for their endless array of bizarre bingo tales!
